What are pneumatic actuators?

Pneumatic actuators are key components that are used to create either rotary or linear motion within a pressurized pneumatic system. When air or gas enters an actuator, the generated pressure is used as energy to move a piston. This movement may be used for many different applications, including pushing, clamping or punching equipment. As they are often considered to be a cost-effective and potentially less hazardous option than hydraulic actuators, they are commonly used in factories, packaging machinery and vehicle mechanics.

What types of pneumatic actuators are available?

Single-acting pneumatic actuators

This type of actuator has a single-entry point for air or gas. As the pressurized air enters the component, it directs the internal piston in a linear direction and is then returned to its original position using a spring.

Double-acting pneumatic actuators

These have two ports at either end of the actuator, which allows the piston to be pushed both forwards and backwards using air pressure.

Pneumatic rotary actuators

This type of actuator creates a rotary (or turning) motion by using compressed air to move the piston or diaphragm inside the component. Pneumatic rotary actuators offer powerful performance for their size, are highly durable and require little maintenance.

Pneumatic rodless actuators

These actuators use compressed air to provide a linear movement within pneumatic systems. Rodless actuators can be used in many types of application and benefit from being strong while lightweight.
